Discover Cabramatta - A Taste of Asia
Just an hour from the Sydney CBD, Cabramatta is an explosion of Asian culture and colour. The suburb is Australia's most ethnically diverse area, with 75% of its residents born overseas.

The Festival is recognised as one of Sydney’s biggest Asian celebrations that attracts more than 70,000 people from the local community and across Sydney.

Issues
Cabramatta - A Major Centre of the Future
Cabramatta was identified in the State Government Metropolitan Strategy as a potential major centre for the future. Recognition was on account of the suburb's assets, including transport and open space connections and its potential as a shopping and service hub.
Southern Sydney Freight Line
The Australian Rail Track Corporation is constructing a dedicated freight line between Macarthur and Sefton - the Southern Sydney Freight Line (SSFL). This 36 kilometres of track will provide a dedicated freight link between Melbourne and Brisbane. The track will pass through the east side of the Cabramatta Town Centre next to the current passenger lines.
Fairfield City Council is concerned about the impact of the proposed SSFL on our City and local residents and is working with the proponent and key stakeholders to minimise any negative effects. Council does, however, support the construction of the SSFL as an underground track through Cabramatta and the simultaneous construction of State Rail's third underground passenger line.
Projects
Cabravale Leisure Centre
Council's new $13.25 million Cabravale Leisure Centre has recently been completed as part of Council's Major Works Program and opened in June 2007. The design was finalised after extensive community consultation. The Centre is located on Broomfield Street Cabramatta close to the Cabramatta Town Centre and the rail and cycle-way networks. It has a health, wellness and fitness focus and aims to develop bodies, minds and spirits, while creating a meeting point for the local community. For more information click here.
Cabramatta Town Centre Redevelopment and Car Park
The Cabramatta Town Centre redevelopment and car park project is progressing in two parts:
1. Review of land use planning controls:
Council is currently reviewing the existing planning controls that apply to the Cabramatta Town Centre. To ensure the most desirable outcome, Council has sought feedback from property owners, business operators, local residents, visitors and other stakeholders. This feedback will provide further direction and allow opportunities for positive improvements and changes to the Cabramatta Town Centre. The new Development Control Plan will be on exhibition in late 2006.

2. Expression of Interest (EOI) for the redevelopment of the Dutton Lane area:
Council is currently working to develop an EOI for the Dutton Lane precinct in order to meet the suburbs’ car parking and urban renewal needs. It is anticipated that the EOI will be on public exhibition in late 2006.
Cabramatta Traffic Management
Fairfield City Council has invested $3.8 million to the Cabramatta Traffic Management project to help ensure the Cabramatta Town Centre is more accessible for local businesses, visitors and the local community. The works will include new traffic signals and improvement of the area's appearance with upgrades to the footpath, kerbs and gutters. The works will ensure greater pedestrian safety and improved traffic flow and are part of Council's Major Works Program.
Council is also committed to providing solutions to meet the car parking and urban renewal needs in Cabramatta. Some short-term solutions will be implemented in the first half of 2006, including construction of the Hill Street car park, which will provide an additional 100 spaces for Cabramatta.
Closed Circuit Television
CityWatch
CityWatch is an important forum between community interest groups and front line police officers that facilitates direct discussion on policing and safety issues.
Fairfield City Council is a key member of CityWatch. Other partners include the Community Relations Commission, Department of Community Services, NSW Police Service, key members of the public, business organisations, professionals and representatives of multicultural groups.
CityWatch meets every two months to discuss and address key safety issues in Cabramatta. An annual forum in June provides the opportunity for all community members to get involved and contribute to the suburb's safety needs.
Cabramatta Identity Project
Council recently employed three artists to work with residents and local community groups to discover the many stories and identities of Cabramatta. With words, photography and film, the artists have depicted stories about the people who help make Cabramatta a unique place.
'I Live Here – The Stories of Cabramatta' was exhibited at the Fairfield City Museum and Gallery in March 2006. Throughout the rest of the year, the exhibition will be displayed in various locations, including the Council Administration Centre and Fairfield Hospital. The information and stories gathered will also be used to inspire new public art for Cabra Vale Park, a project which will involve the same artists.
'I Live Here – The Stories of Cabramatta' is funded by the NSW Ministry for the Arts and has been implemented by Fairfield City Council in partnership with the Department of Community Services.
