There are over 20,000 small businesses in Fairfield City - over 4000 in Smithfield-Wetherill Park alone. To help these businesses reduce their operating costs and improve their environmental performance, Fairfield City Council, in partnership with the Environmental Trust has created the Sustain 'n' Save program.
Small to medium sized businesses that qualify for this innovative program will work to increase resource efficiency (including energy, water and waste) and improving their environmental performance.
The process begins with a free environmental assessment to demonstrate where efficiencies can be made, money saved and a competitive advantage achieved through the setting of clear and achievable goals. Council also provides a range of rewards for members, including industry workshops, local discounts, retrofit assistance, free specialist advice and the opportunity to create valuable networks. Council will work to tailor the program and recommendations to your business needs as well as profile businesses that display commitment and leadership within the community.

Sydney Water
Get your new FREE pre-Rinse Valve! For more information click here
Does your business use a pre rinse valve to wash plates, glasses and utensils? You can save water, money and the environment - Sydney Water is offering to replace your pre-rinse valves for FREE!
Restaurants and take away food shops in Sydney use more than 5.9 billion litres of water a year rinsing dishes.
Fairfield City Council is working with Sydney Water to promote the Smart Rinse program to hospitality businesses in the Fairfield Local Government Area.
From April 2008 onwards Sydney Water plumbers will visit hospitality businesses to offer to replace pre-rinse spray valves with a water efficient one for FREE.
These Smart Rinse valves use about 40% less water at higher pressure to clean off food faster. Businesses can call 1800 622 695 between 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday to book a visit. Plumbers will then come to your business at a time convenient to you (between 7am and 7pm Monday to Saturday). If the new valve does not work for any reason, the plumber will change it back within the first month.

Carbon Calculator for your Business
Climate change will have financial impacts for businesses. Price rises are expected due to businesses absorbing costs from suppliers and production as they comply with upcoming legislation. Analysts anticipate a 'trickle effect' with the majority of businesses impacted by the scheme from the second half of 2011. Calculate your carbon emissions and find out how your business can prepare for the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS).
You can enter data such as fuel or electricity used and receive an indication of whether your corporation may trigger corporate and facility level greenhouse gas emissions and energy use thresholds for reporting set out in the NGER Act. You should first assess whether your corporation has operational control over any facilities. If it does, you can estimate emissions from those facilities by collating data on any energy consumption or emissions sources at a facility.
Follow the easy steps through the application to receive an estimate of greenhouse gas emissions and energy use based on data entered.

Energy Efficiency in your Business
With the new-found awareness of the potential of energy efficiency, 2010 promises to be a year of action across the business community. There are three key factors that get business to take action: incentives, funding and solutions that are proven to work.
Industrial sector businesses are constantly seeking new ways to reduce costs and optimise the operation of their facilities. Traditionally in this equation energy management has been assigned a low priority. However, with federal policies and state legislation requiring specific reporting and compliance to energy use and greenhouse gas emission control, members of the industrial sector are changing the way they manage energy and finding effective management of energy can deliver operational efficiency, reduce operation costs and offer significant long-term savings.
The Energy Efficiency for Small Business Program is available to businesses that use up to approximately $20,000 in electricity a year or have up to approximately 10 employees.
The program offered by Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water provides:
* a subsidised personalised energy assessment and action plan
* a 50% rebate of up to $5,000 for businesses that use $5,000-$20,000 a year in electricity and $2,000 for businesses that use less than $5,000 a year in electricity.
To find out if you are eligible for the program click here, complete the Sustain'n'SAVE energy questionnaire.
Sustain'n'SAVE Member, R & R Glass talk about how retrofitting to become more energy efficient is helping them stay on top of the competition
R & R Glass Services has manufactured, supplied and installed glass and mirror products such as shower screens, glass splashbacks and cut to size glass to the general public and the construction industry for 35 years.
Over the years, the company has been mindful of it's environmental impact and has often found that adopting environmentally friendly procedures proves
surprisingly cost effective. For example, we pay less to recycle our glass and paper than we would to throw it in the general rubbish bin and when we recycle our aluminium, we are paid for it.
Most recently, we had new low energy light bays installed in the factory as an energy saving measure. This will decrease our electricity bill and has made the factory a much better place to work in because the light is so much better now.
Also, the factory ceiling is very difficult to access and changing the fluoro lights previously was a nightmare. Maintenance of the new lighting system is now undertaken by the company who installed, so that's another problem we do not have to worry about.

Total Fuels becomes more energy efficient in 2010!
Congratulations to Sustain'n'SAVE member Amir Aziz for his recent decision to improve the energy efficiency of his business, Total Fuels at 62 Railway Parade, Fairfield.
By retrofitting new lighting he stands to reduce his greenhouse gas emissions by 5.8 tonnes.

Resource Efficiency in your Business (E-Waste)
Fairfield City Council are in partnership with Reverse Garbage to collect your business e-waste. Reverse Garbage ,a not for profit organisation in Sydney, have been leaders in resource recovery for over 35 years and we are proud to have them as our E-waste partner.
Millions of computers, monitors, televisions, printers and mobile phone are in or on their way to landfill, it is evident that e-waste is a spiraling problem in Australia. Reverse Garbage collect tonnes of these items and everything in between every month and funnel them back into the re-use chain.
As a member of the Sustain'n'SAVE program, your business can take advantage of this free pick up or drop off service. These items will be refurbished and redistributed at low cost locally or sent as aid to remote Indigenous communities and the Sunshine Childrens Villages Charity in Cambodia.
Where refurbishment is not possible, adaptive recycling processes ensure the items are disassembled into their individual components and either sold as spare parts, elements in art or recycled.
While some computer companies offer their own recycling programs, the major issue is non branded items (white box systems) and make up 50-60% of the e-waste processed in the Marrickville warehouse.
