Prairiewood was identified in the State Government Metropolitan Strategy as a potential major centre for the future. Recognition was on account of the suburb's assets, including transport and open space connections and its potential as a shopping and service hub.

Prairiewood Town Centre Master Plan

Fairfield City Council's vision for Prairiewood is expressed in the Prairiewood Town Centre Master Plan, which was adopted by Council in December 2005. The Plan was finalised after significant community consultation. It is a document that provides planning principles to promote the orderly growth and development of the Prairiewood Town Centre.

As a result of developing the masterplan it became clear that few people knew where Prairiewood was located, as most of the services and facilities located there use a different location name. A Branding Strategy and logo for the area are currently being developed.
