International Day of People with Disability - 3 December 

International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD) is celebrated on 3 December each year. It is a United Nations observed day aimed at increasing public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability. 

Each year the United Nations determines a theme. We are usually advised in the lead-up to the day. Stay posted for more information on the 2024 theme. 

Each year, Fairfield City Council organises a celebration in honour of the day. Watch this space for details about the event.

Zero Barriers

Council is a proud partner in the Zero Barriers initiative. Zero Barriers is a free business and service support project that aims to eliminate barriers for people with disability when shopping, using services or participating in activities in their local communities. Council is working to connect local businesses and services with the initiative to create a more accessible community.

Part of what makes Fairfield such a liveable City is its accessibility, which is helping ensure everyone feels they belong regardless of age, ability or background.

National Disability Insurance Scheme

Fairfield City Council is an accredited NDIS provider. To check if you are eligible or for more information of NDIS funding visit National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) website or Settlement Services International (SSI) local area coordination.

Fairfield City Council offers specialist support as an accredited NDIS provider in following areas:

  • Best Start Education & Care (for children aged 0-12)
  • Exercise and water safety sessions (for people under 65 years of age)

Best Start Education & Care

Fairstart Early Intervention offers support to children with a disability or developmental delay and includes services like speech pathology and occupational therapy. For more information about this, please visit our Fairstart page.

Fairstart Early Intervention now also provides online video therapy. Visit our Telehealth page for more details.


Exercise and Water Safety

Fairfield Leisure Centres offer:

  • Initial assessments
  • Exercise physiology sessions
  • Personal training sessions
  • Water safety sessions.

Our services are registered under Capacity Building - Health and Wellbeing, which must be included in individual plans to enable us to service you.

Local Area Coordinator (EACH and SSI)  

SSI and EACH partners with the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to deliver Local Area Coordination services within Fairfield City. They support people to access the NDIS.

EACH is the NDIS Early Childhood Partner in South West Sydney. They deliver the Early Childhood Approach for children aged 0-6 years with a disability or developmental delay. They work with parents, carers and families to support children to have the best possible start in life. Visit their website for more details.

South West Sydney Disability Network

South West Sydney Disability Forum (SWS Disability Forum) is supported, co-convened and hosted by Fairfield City Council in partnership with Canterbury Bankstown Council and Liverpool Council and focuses on networking, collaboration, advocacy, training and strengthening of partnerships within the disability services sector.

The 2023 SWS Ageing Forum was hosted at Liverpool and was a huge success with over 80 disability sector organisations attending. Please see the presentation for the presenters and feedback from the day.

Master Locksmith Association Key (MLAK)

The Master Locksmith Association Key (MLAK) is a master key that fits into specially designed locks, allowing access to public toilets and enabling people with a mobility difficulty to access public toilet facilities throughout New South Wales.

The MLAK key is available for purchase from your local locksmith. These locksmiths will have the MLAK sign displayed inside their window. Search here to find your local MLAK key locksmith here.
