Journeys In Fairfield: Migrant Hostels

Immerse yourself in images from the Cabramatta and Villawood hostels, which were operational between the 1950s and 1980s.

The Cabramatta and Villawood migrant hostels were operational between 1949 and 1983.

Following WWII, Australia welcomed more than 470,000 migrants from Europe, many of whom spent some time in hostels. At the end of the war in Vietnam thousands sought refuge in Australia.

Between 1978 and 1982, 65,000 refugees settled in Australia, many at the Cabramatta and Villawood migrant hostels. The focus of this exhibition is the everyday hostel life of families who migrated after WWII.

The exhibition travels to Wetherill park Library from May to August.
