What is the Lunar New Year celebration about?

Lunar New Year is a significant cultural celebration in many South East Asian countries.

Lunar New Year date for 2020 is on Saturday 25 January 2020 (Day 1). Leading up to this day, people clean their homes to prepare for the New Year. It is also considered bad luck to sweep or clean on New Year’s Day as you may sweep away your good luck and fortune! The first person to enter your house on New Year’s Day is believed to either bring you good luck or bad luck for the rest of the year – so be careful!

Lions and string firecrackers re-open the shops and restaurants to banish evil from the old new and bring in good luck and fortune for the New Year. You will see businesses decorated in red with lanterns, ornaments, and flowers such as marigolds.

How can I get to the festival?

Transport to the festival is available by boarding a train to Cabramatta train station. Cabramatta Station falls on the T2 Inner West & Leppington Line, T3 Bankstown Line or T5 Cumberland Line and is a 45-minute journey from Central train station. Take advantage of the public transport for easy access to the festival at Cabramatta Town Centre.

Where can I park?

There are car parks and street parking available in Cabramatta, subject to availability. However, we suggest catching public transport to avoid the hassle.

What kind of entertainment are there for kids?

There will be no time for the kids to be bored.

On top of the live stage performances, there will be free kids art and crafts and children’s chopsticks competition. They will also love watching the lion dancers in action, and what kid wouldn’t want some lucky candy from the God of Fortune?

Are there any other attractions that people may be interested in?

The ever-popular food competitions will return, including children’s chopsticks. And don’t forget, Cabramatta is home to more than 100 restaurants specialising in quality and affordable South East Asian cuisine, so it is the perfect event for the food lovers of Sydney to visit!

What should I bring?

It is an event held in summer so please dress accordingly. Make sure to bring along your hat, water bottle, and apply sunscreen.

In the event of wet weather, the event site will be assessed to determine the suitability to continue the event and program.
