Local Government School Tours
Civic Education Program
Fairfield City Council's Local Government School Tour provides students with the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and understanding of the role Council plays within their community.
Council’s Communications and Marketing Division presents an educational and informative program aimed at primary school students from Years 3 to 6. The program covers the roles performed by Local, State and Federal governments and then looks at local government in more depth.
Students learn about the many services and facilities offered by local councils and about how a Mayor and Councillors are elected.
They are given the chance to elect their own “Mayor for the Morning”, after which students are “called to order” as a mock Council meeting is held in the Chambers. The students will also have the opportunity to be involved in a council meeting roleplay.
Mayor of Fairfield City Frank Carbone also visits during the session to meet the students and answer questions they may have about local government and what life is like as Mayor.
The free program runs from 10am to 11.30am.
