Alan Young has held the position of City Manager, Fairfield City Council, since October 1999.
As City Manager, Alan has overseen three Local Government elections, the reinvigoration of Council's culture, and he recently implemented an organisational restructure to strengthen Council's strategic footing and capacity to better serve its community.
In his 33-year career in Local Government Alan has worked for seven councils in the Sydney metropolitan area. Starting in rates and payroll at Randwick Council in 1975, Alan gained wide-ranging experience as he worked his way up in various finance positions. In 1986, he rose to the position of Deputy Town Clerk at Lane Cove Council, followed by director-level positions at Rockdale and Parramatta councils before arriving at Fairfield.
Alan is an Executive Board Member of risk management and insurance organisations, Westpool (Deputy Chair) and the United Independent Pools.
Alan has a Business Degree with a Major in Finance, as well as an Associate Diploma in Local Government Administration and the Local Government Town Clerk's qualification.

In collaboration with the City Manager, the Directors guide the development of Council’s strategic direction and are responsible for the relationship between the elected Council and the organisation.
The Directors focus on strategic organisational priorities and are accountable for ensuring the delivery of Council’s commitments to the community as identified in the Delivery Program, a number of nominated strategic issues and responding to regional and industry issues.
The Director’s role requires a commitment to Council’s values and reputation, effective internal and external collaboration, political awareness, strategic thinking and visionary leadership.
