Mayor of Fairfield City Frank Carbone has unveiled an exciting and bold vision to turn Fairfield Showground into a Centre of Excellence.

The proposal will create one of the biggest sporting and cultural festival precincts in South West Sydney.

At last Tuesday night’s regular monthly Council meeting, Councillors unanimously endorsed a call by Mayor Carbone for staff to investigate and develop a Fairfield Showground Masterplan, turning it into a premier location to bring the community together for celebration, shopping, and sporting excellence.

“We’re looking at connecting the City. This is a major step towards transforming one of the City’s most significant and valuable assets close to the geographic heart of the City,” Mayor Carbone said. “This project is designed to put Fairfield City on the map, to create a destination the rest of Sydney and elsewhere will envy. We will host bigger festivals, support our most talented athletes to reach elite status, and have a venue for international-level sporting events.

“The entire precinct will take care of the community’s health and wellbeing needs. It will complement our City’s cultural diversity and be something of which our residents can be proud. We’re proposing to open the Showground and give it back to the community, to provide facilities for this generation and the next.

The proposed first stage includes an oval for AFL, cricket and festivals, an international size field for football (soccer) and rugby league, and a synthetic field for all weather sports. People will be able to enjoy the sporting facilities, as well as walking paths, bike tracks, and a community garden.

The popular Saturday Fairfield Markets will continue with improved facilities.

“The site is close to the Bus T-way and close to related facilities,” Mayor Carbone said. “Future light rail access through this part of the City is a reality with the proposed construction of the Western Sydney airport.

“The time is right for a project such as this. Fairfield Showground will be developed into a significant destination for people outside of the City with the potential to grow into an international-standard facility.”
