Cabramatta and Canley Heights will come to life on the weekend of 21–22 February, as Fairfield City celebrates the most important cultural event in South East Asia, Lunar New Year.

Fairfield City Council will welcome in the Year of the Goat and Ram by hosting two days of celebrations at Freedom Plaza, Cabramatta on 21–22 February, from 10am–4pm each day and at Canley Heights Town Square on 21 February, from 6pm–9pm.

Mayor of Fairfield City Frank Carbone said Fairfield City was the perfect place for families to celebrate Lunar New Year.

“At Cabramatta there will be a variety of entertainment all day. The Blue Star Air Conditioning Stage will feature performances by Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, presented by Peter Warren Automotive,” Mayor Carbone said.

“I am also excited to say that returning this year is the local boy with the huge voice, Tee, 2014 The X Factor contestant, performing live on Saturday at 2.30pm.

“Crowds can enjoy chopstick and prawn peeling competitions, presented by Cabra Bowls and hosted by the CLEO 2014 Bachelor of the Year Thien Nguyen. There will also be cooking demonstrations, a fashion parade, parkour stunt locals Team 9Lives, along with plenty of cultural performances of music, dance and singing.

“Families can meet the God of Wealth who will bring fortune to your family in the New Year and try traditional New Year foods, such as sticky rice, dumplings and taro cakes.

“There is also plenty happening in Canley Heights, including face painting, jumping castles, lion dancing and an eating competition presented by Huong Xua Restaurant. At 8pm families can watch the dragon dance, a performance held especially for New Year, followed by a spectacular fireworks display.

“Cabramatta, Canley Vale and Canley Heights are the South East Asian heart of Sydney and visitors can indulge in an authentic dining experience year round. There are hundreds of restaurants as well as grocers and specialty stores waiting to be discovered,” said Mayor Carbone.

Cabramatta and Canley Vale are only 45 minutes by train from the Sydney CBD, with the station at the heart of the shopping and dining precinct. Canley Heights can be reached by car on the Cumberland Highway.
