Pre-schoolers and early learners from Fairfield City Council’s Wetherill Park Early Learning Centre got their hands dirty on Friday 28 July, planting native trees for Schools Tree Day 2017, which is part of National Tree Day celebrations.
Council’s Nalawala Community Nursery donated 35 trees and shrubs for the children to plant in the centre’s outdoor learning area.
Children were all smiles while engaging in this fun hands-on activity that taught them about the planting process and encouraged them to look after the environment.
Mayor of Fairfield City Frank Carbone said getting children actively involved in planting teaches them to admire and look after our environment.
“Connecting with nature assists in developing a child’s learning while also encourages them to get outside and have some fun,” Mayor Carbone said.
Parents joined their children on the day and donated flowers, potting mix and soil to transform the centres backyard into an inviting place for children to enjoy each day.
