New roundabout slip lane ready to open

Published Wednesday, 2nd September 2015

Work on building a slip lane on the western side of the Polding Street roundabout at Smithfield is being completed this week and the new lane will be opened this weekend.

The State Government provided a $3 million grant to Fairfield City Council for the project, which included $500,000 million in the 2012-13 financial year and a further $2.5 million in the 2013-14 financial year to investigate the intersection and develop a program of improvement works.

The large roundabout, which has four entry points and five exits, has had drivers faced with decision-making on when to enter and how to travel through the roundabout to the desired exit. This new slip lane, as well as one on the eastern side, aims to simplify decision-making for drivers entering the roundabout and provides a safer environment.

Separation of traffic into specific lanes for specific exits simplifies traffic movements approaching the entry points.

Roads and Maritime Services will now continue to work closely with Fairfield City Council to monitor and evaluate the roundabout to determine if its operation is satisfactory.
