2016 Australia Day Ambassador named

Alex Jones - Australian performer, director, Auslan interpreter and ambassador for people with hearing difficulties – is Fairfield City Council’s Australia Day Ambassador for 2016.
Mr Jones was born deaf and has spent much of his life advocating for people with a disability and ensuring they are given an opportunity to live their lives to their fullest potential without any barriers.
He also has marked achievements in business, film, television and theatre.
After graduating from New York University, he was recruited in 1997 by the Australian Theatre of the Deaf. He has appeared in a number of film and television productions and has provided consulting services to the film/TV industry.
Mr Jones co-founded Access Innovation Media (Ai-Media) with Tony Abrahams in Sydney in 2003, bringing an innovative solution to captioning for multi-channel environments using digital technology.
He made his first debut as a theatrical interpreter for Stephen Koplowitz's Off Site/On Site at New York Dance Theatre Workshop. He has also served as director and adviser for interpreters for many Broadway productions, such as Sunset Boulevard and Private Lives, for the Shakespeare in the Park festival for Troilus and Cressida, and for The Merry Wives of Windsor at the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park, New York City.
Mr Jones continued to bring his skills as a theatre interpreter to Australia for Rent, Priscilla the Musical, Streetcar Named Desire, Mardi Gras shows and the recent production of Strictly Ballroom at the Lyric Theatre, Sydney.
He served as an ambassador for the Don’t DIS my ABILITY campaign for International Day of People with Disability in NSW for six years and has been a NSW Australia Day ambassador for four consecutive years.
Mr Jones is a proud father to two boys, one of whom is deaf.
Fairfield City Council’s Australia Day Community Awards Ceremony will be held on Friday 22 January 2016. The ceremony will include the announcement of the 2016 Fairfield City Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of The Year, Volunteer of the Year and Sports Achiever of the Year, along with recipients of Australia Day medallions and certificates.
