Published Friday, 22nd January 2016
Cabramatta and Canley Heights will come to life throughout February as Fairfield City celebrates one of the most important cultural event in South East Asia, Lunar New Year.
Fairfield City Council will welcome the Year of the Monkey by hosting two days of celebrations at Freedom Plaza, Cabramatta, on 13-14 February, 9am–4pm each day and at Canley Heights Town Square on 6 February between 4pm and 10pm.
Mayor of Fairfield City Frank Carbone said Fairfield City was proud to host such important festivals for families in our community and from across Sydney.
“Cabramatta will have family friendly entertainment over the whole weekend to welcome in the Year of the Monkey. Curious George, the world’s favourite monkey, will be joining us this year with performances on the Blue Star Air Conditioning Stage.
“I am also excited to welcome the Feathered Friends Bird show to Cabramatta this year. Their interactive performances and rainforest display will be a real highlight.
“Crowds can enjoy prawn peeling and chopstick competitions, presented by Cabramatta Bowls. There will also be cooking demonstrations, performances by talented locals Dauntless Movement Crew, fashion parades, appearances by the Shaolin Kung Fu meditation temple contortionists, lion dances as well as plenty of cultural music, dance and singing.
“Families can meet the God of Fortune, who will bring luck to your family in the New Year, and they can try traditional New Year foods.
“There is also plenty happening in Canley Heights, including an eating competition presented by Huong Xua Restaurant and lion dance. Later in the evening, families can watch the dragon dance, a performance held especially for New Year, followed by a spectacular fireworks display at 8.45pm.”
Cabramatta, Canley Vale and Canley Heights are the South East Asian heart of Sydney and visitors can indulge in an authentic dining experience year round. There are hundreds of restaurants as well as grocers and specialty stores waiting to be discovered.
Cabramatta and Canley Vale are only 45 minutes by train from the Sydney CBD, with the stations at the heart of the shopping and dining precincts. Canley Heights can be reached by car on the Cumberland Highway.
