Fairfield City Open Libraries are making more stories available in more languages, thanks to the Languages Other Than English (LOTE) online library database.

The database of stories and languages is continually growing, and will have more than 400 stories translated into more than 20 languages by the end of 2020.

Children can also read while the book is narrated to them in English to assist their English reading and speaking skills.

Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone said this is another way Fairfield City Council is making its libraries more accessible and relevant to our diverse community.

“It is important that we continue to provide opportunities for our residents, including children, to access stories in their own language as well as to learn English,” Mayor Carbone said.

“We have more than 140,000 residents who speak a language other than English. Around 30 per cent of those speak very little or no English.

“The Languages Other Than English database is a fun and engaging way for children to learn to read in their language as well as in English.

“Our libraries are always looking for innovative new ways to connect with our diverse community and I encourage everyone to become a libraries member and check out this FREE service on the website.”
