Local families will have a new, exciting place to exercise and take in all that Fairfield Showground has to offer with new shared walking paths currently under construction.

Council is spending $1.6 million on building the pathway at the Showground, creating a 1.6km loop around the entire Showground site for walkers, joggers, bicycles and wheelchairs. It will also be linked to outdoor gym equipment and the Deerbush Park all-abilities playground, providing top class facilities in the heart of Fairfield local government area.

The path will also provide access to such locations within the Showground as the playing fields, amenities building, grandstands, the People’s Globe, the Nalawala Community Centre, covered festival and market areas, and car parks.

The community pavers purchased by residents over the last 18 months will be laid in the path close to Deerbush Park.

Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone said the shared paths will be a great way for people of all ages and abilities to stay healthy and active, as well as access the Showground facilities.

“Whether you are walking or running, cycling or using a wheelchair, these paths will be an enjoyable and leisurely way to take in everything Fairfield Showground has to offer,” Mayor Carbone said.

“Fairfield Showground is the geographic, cultural and sporting heart of our City. It will be a mini Centennial Park with something for everyone to enjoy.

“Council is committed to providing the best paths and parks to encourage residents from right across our City to be healthy and active together. This financial year, Council is spending $3.1 million on new and upgraded paths and $1.25 million on playground and sportsfield upgrades right across our City, in addition to the work at Fairfield Showground.

“These projects strengthen our City’s reputation as a great place to live, work, play and raise a family.”

The paths will be progressively opened over the first half of the year.
