We are aware of six confirmed cases over the past week of COVID-19 in residents of Fairfield City. That is from around 6,000 tests conducted in just the past week at testing locations such as Fairfield Showground and Fisher Street carpark in Cabramatta.

While the virus is still among us, I am proud of our community for stepping up and getting tested. Our testing locations have been some of the most successful in NSW, in terms of numbers of people getting tested.

While Fairfield City had been COVID-free for some time, the virus has re-entered our city (and the state) from Melbourne, via the Crossroads Hotel, and as we all know a number of businesses and two schools in the area have had reported cases.

While this is concerning and we need to be vigilant and maintain our social distancing and hygiene, it is reassuring that the vast majority of the cases being found in our city are from known sources, which NSW Health is already monitoring. Many of the new cases are in people who are already isolating because they had been identified as a close contact of a confirmed case.

I would like to thank NSW Health for their highly detailed and robust contact tracing efforts, and for working with us to provide testing locations in our city.

It’s critical that we do the right thing if we have been identified as a close contact, and follow the directions from NSW Health if we have visited any of the outbreak areas. Stay updated by following us on Facebook – things are changing rapidly so it’s important you keep up to date.

We all have a responsibility to look out for the most vulnerable in our community. Elderly parents and grandparents, and those with underlying conditions. Check in on them and provide them with the information they need. You can also register them for the Mayor’s wellbeing register.

Council is working hard to help keep you informed and supported during this time:

  • We’ve developed the Mayor’s wellbeing register for vulnerable people without support
  • We’ve introduced a volunteer register to enlist people willing to help out
  • We’ve restructured our rates so that most ratepayers will not see a rates increase this year, and have kept our rates one of the lowest in Sydney
  • Assisted Fairfield Food Services with delivery for Meals on Wheels
  • Currently enlisting volunteers to sew masks for vulnerable community members
  • Supporting local business with a #support local campaign, and temporary outdoor dining policy for restaurants and cafes.

Let’s keep on top of this – we’ve got through this before and we can do it again. Now, more than ever, we need to keep up the handwashing, social distancing, getting tested, and considering wearing a mask when in crowded situations like supermarkets and on public transport.
