Koonoona Park opens on Monday

Council is committed to creating unique experiences for families to come together with their children, by building some of the best parks in Sydney. The newest of these is Koonoona Park, our $1.9 million 3,200 sqm park for the families of Villawood, Carramar and beyond.
Koonoona Park will open from next Monday and includes a flying fox, half basketball court, outdoor table tennis table, play equipment and so much more. It also features a first for our City – a ground-level net and ropes course that is one of only a few in all of NSW. Recognising the need for more open space in the area, Council purchased six residential blocks to transform them into green space, investing almost $2 million in total, with $300,000 in funding from the NSW Government.
We want each of our City’s super parks to offer something innovative and unique for residents to encourage families to travel around and experience the different spaces our City has to offer. These parks are being built across our City to be easily accessible for everyone, no matter where you live. We want to make sure there is something for everyone at our parks, and that is why, early next year, we will open an all abilities playground at Deerbush Park at Fairfield Showground – another first for our City.
While we are committed to providing unique experiences in our bigger parks, we also recognise the importance of upgrades on our smaller local parks. We have around 200 parks in our City and they are equally important to enable easy walking access to a place you can be active and have fun, and this financial year we have plans to improve even more of them. We are working with the State Government on a $2 million upgrade of Carrawood Park in Carramar. In the coming months, we will engage with the community on options for this exciting project.
We will also improve the playgrounds at Coolatai Park in Bossley Park; Bareena Park in Canley Vale; Yennora Park and Knight Park in Yennora; and Peter Dawson Park in Mt Pritchard.
These improvements underline how important open spaces are to our community and that’s why we are investing more than $20.2 million on improvements to our open spaces over the next year. These parks create great spaces for families to come together and play, to stay fit and healthy, and make our City a great place to live, work and raise a family.
