More rainfall to come

Our City has continued to have above average rainfall over the last few months which has caused damage to our roads and disrupted Council’s grass mowing program at more than 1,000 locations across the City.

While, so far our region has experienced low levels of flooding; there have been reports of water over road in flood prone areas, and the Fairfield State Emergency (SES) Unit has been door knocking in parts of Lansvale warning residents to prepare for more heavy rain.

Our detention basins are performing well with collecting rainwater and slowly releasing it into our creek system, allowing our creeks more time to empty when they are overwhelmed and overflowing.

We ask that residents remain vigilant in these wet conditions and that you especially drive with caution in the rain, keeping an eye out for potholes.

Financial assistance is available to residents impacted by severe weather and floods. Visit service.nsw.gov.au/floods/financial-assistance for eligibility and to apply.

Council is aware the grass has grown at an accelerated rate over the past week. We are allocating extra resources – with every lawn mower, big and small and every garden team out across the City to get it cut as soon as we can, but we can only do this following an extended period of sunshine to allow the grounds to dry.

With more than 1,000 locations to mow; including 141 play spaces, 32 sporting fields, verges and laneways, we ask that residents understand that the recent wet weather has meant that the grass has not only grown quickly, but that the ground has been saturated by the high amount of rain. The use of heavy machinery on soaked grounds can cause a lot of damage to the fields, so there’s only so much we can do until the grounds are completely dry.

As the rain begins to ease, Council will also focus its efforts on restoring local roads including permanently patching potholes when the roads are dry. While our crews do their best to spot potholes, they are easy to miss, so I encourage you to help us by reporting potholes at www.fairfieldcity.nsw.gov.au/RoadMaintenance.
