Become a volunteer

Last week Council launched the Fairfield City Volunteer Register to help boost volunteer numbers for local charities and organisations.

It has been important for all of us to practice social distancing to stop the spread of COVID-19 in our City, but it has impacted local volunteer numbers when we need them most.

Volunteers are the heartbeat of our community. Without our volunteers, many important programs and charities would not reach the people that need them, or would not run at all. Volunteers keep us safe in emergencies, protect our environment, provide support to those in need and help run weekend sport and festivals. They work tirelessly and often with little recognition, but their efforts change lives and communities.

This week is National Volunteer Week and we pay tribute to these local community heroes and urge everyone who is able to consider putting up their hand and becoming a volunteer. Many of us have more time on our hands at the moment. This is an excellent opportunity to give back to the community and experience the joy of giving.

Our Volunteer Register lets you list your areas of skill, experience and passions so you can be matched up with the right charity. We want volunteering to be a fulfilling experience for volunteers. To learn more about volunteer opportunities, call 9725 0222.

Volunteering Australia is also asking people to get behind the ‘Wave Your Appreciation for Volunteers’ campaign by waving a special smile on social media this week. From the summer bushfires to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the last six months have shown just how much we need volunteers, and it is important to recognise them. For details visit www.volunteeringaustralia.org. On behalf of Fairfield City, thank you to all our volunteers. By giving a little of your time, you are making a world of difference in our community.
