What is Council building?
Council is building a new three level multi-storey car park on the site of the existing Hughes Street car park. Ground floor of the new car park will provide for loading for 12 small rigid service vehicles and seven accessible parking spaces. The second and top-level will provide general parking and will have direct connection to the existing Dutton Lane car park.
The new car park creates 219 parking spaces. The project also includes construction of a new lift, pedestrian links to Dutton Plaza and improved ‘live’ parking availability information signage.
The new building will have a brightly coloured façade to reflect the vibrancy of Cabramatta. The east and west-facing facades will have a ‘green wall’ to help keep the building cool in summer. It will also have rainwater tanks to collect water, solar panels to generate power for electric vehicle charging and environmentally sensitive treatment of stormwater. CCTV cameras will be installed to maintain security.
Will there be any new shops or commercial spaces?
No. The approved Development Application is for car parking only.
When will work commence?
Construction has commenced. The construction period will approximately take nine months. Work hours will be 7am to 6am weekdays and 8am to 1pm Saturdays. There will be no work on Sundays and Public Holidays.
Existing car park improvements
The internal circulation of traffic in the existing car parks will be changed. This is to improve access into the car park and make movement of pedestrians on the ground floor safer. During the change, new line-marking and signs will be installed and car park staff will be on hand to help as we make the change. Dutton Lane car park will get a new accessible toilet and bike parking.
What will happen to parking and deliveries during construction?
Temporary on-road loading spaces will be provided in Hill Street. Council car parks at John Street, Hill Street and Fisher Street remain open for public use.
How does circulation around Dutton Lane change?
Access into the Dutton Lane loop is unchanged. All drivers using the Dutton Lane car parks or the Dutton Lane loop will be able to exit onto Hughes Street between 11am and 3pm. Drivers will be required to exit onto Hill Street at all other times.
Will the entry and exits from the existing car park be changed during construction?
The entry arrangements remain unchanged. Exit gates will move with one providing an exit via the lane to Hill Street and the other to Hughes Street. During construction, the exit to Hughes Street will only be available from 11am to 3pm during the week, with the exit to Hughes Street more broadly available on the weekends.
There will be some days when the exit to Hughes Street is unavailable.
