Innovative waste services

I have asked Council to investigate additional opportunities to provide more kerbside pick-ups for our residents, including introducing a resident ‘call up’ service for kerbside collection.

We want to keep the existing service but provide an additional opportunity for residents to arrange a pick-up service when they need it. This will help eliminate illegal waste dumping and better serve our residents, providing kerbside collection at a time that suits them.

I have also asked for a broader review into Fairfield City’s waste and recycling services. I want Council to look at more innovative ways to collect and treat waste and recycling. I have encouraged Council officers to canvas the most innovative solution, including the option of sorting our own waste and recycling.

Council’s contract for pick up and disposal of household waste expires in 2025 and Council will look at all possible options for innovative waste collection and treatment for the future, while keeping costs to residents as low as possible.

In addition to our household waste, we have the increasing challenges of recycling material, such as bottles, plastics and paper. The Container Deposit Scheme and the changes to China’s preparedness to accept recycling are all factors to consider. We have a proud record of helping residents dispose of waste and recycling in a responsible way.

We have regular waste and recycling collection, bulky goods kerbside collections, the annual Spring Clean, e-waste and chemical waste disposal, and the popular additional recycling collection over the Christmas period.

You will receive a leaflet in your letterbox as a reminder – but don’t forget you can put out your recycling bins for an additional collection over the Christmas period. We have a responsibility to seek and provide the best possible solution for future sustainable waste management, while keeping costs to residents as low as possible.
