Gyms in parks program to continue

The health and wellbeing of our residents is one of the most important challenges we face.

There are a significant number of people in the Fairfield LGA who are overweight or obese and many residents do not get the recommended amount of physical activity for good health.

To address this issue, Council has developed the free 'Gyms in Parks' program, which teaches residents how to use the fitness equipment in our parks.

To assist in establishing a habit of exercise, trained fitness instructors also teach simple, effective exercises that residents can do by themselves or with friends once the program has finished.

At the 28 April Council meeting, based on the success of our first 'Gyms in Parks' sessions, I proposed an extension to this program, whereby four additional 'Gyms in Parks' sessions are rolled out across the LGA during the 2015-16 financial year.

This will provide many more residents with the benefits of health and fitness.

Fairfield Business Awards

I am very pleased to congratulate Fairfield City Council's very own Marlborough Street Preschool, Smithfield, on winning the Child Care Services category in the Fairfield City Local Business Awards, which were held last week.

Marlborough Street Preschool is one of 13 preschools and child care services run by Council.

The preschool was nominated by parents for the high quality of customer service, innovative school readiness and sustainable programs it provides to families and children in care.

I also congratulate the many other businesses who received awards for their categories.

Fairfield is filled with many strong local businesses. They play a very important role in Fairfield's economy, providing services and products to our residents as well as an important source of local employment.

Lisa Gerolimatos, Vivi Hoang, Lisa Raetz, Gladys Perez and Merryl Hardy, from Marlborough Street Preschool, accept their award.
