Fairfield Open Libraries Program

I believe in the importance of education and the role Fairfield plays in providing library and information services.

There are many residents in our community who have limited accessibility to computer and internet facilities.

At the 28 February Council meeting I proposed the 'Fairfield City Open Libraries' Program, delivering a number of new initiatives at Fairfield's libraries.

I am pleased to announce that the launch of the first stage of the program will be on 29 May at Whitlam Library.

Residents will have access to digital newspapers and magazines from around the world, free Wi-Fi and improved access to library computer facilities.

Fairfield is a diverse community and I can see many patrons enjoying and benefiting immensely from this new feature.

Free Wi-Fi will provide patrons with access to the internet on personal devices, assisting residents in staying in touch with family and friends, and prepare assignments and resumes.

Our initiative coincides with Libraries and Information Week, 25 to 29 May. The week provides the community with the opportunity to find out about the wide range of services the libraries offer recognising the vital role it plays for research and education.

National Simultaneous Storytime will be held on 27 May where libraries across Australia will read The Brothers Quibble book at 11am. Cabramatta Library will hold the storytime and have a Vietnamese and English translation reading of the book.

National Sorry Day

This annual event is held to commemorate the historical mistreatment of Australia's indigenous population. Acknowledging

this day gives people the chance to come together and share the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities.
