Big year ahead for our City

2020 will be one of the biggest years yet for Fairfield City as we build upon the success of 2019 and deliver more exciting and important projects, services and events for everyone.

Council begins the year in a strong financial position, having recorded a $2.3 million budget surplus while keeping our rates among the lowest in Sydney.

This means we can invest in major projects and infrastructure while maintaining high quality services.

Work is continuing to transform Fairfield Showground. Already the geographical heart of our City, it will also be our cultural heart. Our synthetic pitch and festivals arena are now open, and the new turf football field and multipurpose amenities building will open in the first half of the year. We are also developing plans for an indoor multicultural and sports centre. Early in the year, we will begin work on an all abilities playground at Deerbush Park and a landmark space at the Showground entrance to recognise the diversity of our wonderful City.

In Villawood, work will begin on creating a 3,200 sqm neighbourhood park at the corner of Karella and Koonoona avenues.

We will build a new library in Fairfield City Centre at Hamilton Road, while the existing library in Kenyon Street will be transformed into a business hub to support local businesses and give them access to the space and technology they need to thrive.

Cabravale Leisure Centre will become our City’s first health and wellbeing precinct, providing specialist services to meet the needs of members of our community including seniors, people living with a disability and people recovering from health conditions.

Work continues to upgrade Smithfield Road to four lanes from Elizabeth Drive to Polding Street to improve traffic flow and safety. Work is scheduled to be completed in the middle of the year. At Hughes Street in Cabramatta we are building a 220-space multi-storey car park to improve access to the vibrant Cabramatta town centre.

Council is committed to investing in the infrastructure that promotes healthy, active and affordable lifestyles for local families while maintaining a robust financial position and keeping rates low. I look forward to an exciting year ahead.
