Free child-restraint fitting vouchers

Ensuring that children are fastened in the correct child car seat for their age and size greatly improves the safety of children travelling in vehicles.

A child who is properly secured in an approved child car seat is less likely to be injured or killed in a car crash than one who is not.

Children who are restrained incorrectly are up to seven times more likely to be seriously injured in a crash than children who are fitted in the correct child car seat for their age and size.

Two in three car seats are not being used properly and it can be difficult for people to know if their seat is installed correctly.

To help address this problem Fairfield City Council currently issues child-restraint fitting vouchers to residents.

The vouchers entitle residents to one free child-restraint fitting service at Council's chosen Authorised Safety Restraint Fitter.

These fitters are part of a specialist network and have been trained to fit, inspect and adjust child car seats to make sure they are installed correctly for each vehicle.

They also show people the correct way to use their child car seat so they can be confident their child is safe.

At the 27 October Council meeting I proposed increasing the number of vouchers issued for a year to a total of 360, due to the popularity and high demand for these vouchers. This will allow more residents to utilise this service.

If you are unsure if your child car seat is installed correctly I encourage you to call Council on 9725 0222 and take advantage of this great service.

If you would like more information visit the Child Car Seats website at This site allows you to find and compare more than 200 types of forward facing, rear facing and booster seats.

You can find details of how the seats are tested and rated. It also has information on how to use seats correctly, check if they are still safe and answers to common questions.
