Top award for Youth and Community Centre

I am very pleased to advise that our wonderful new Fairfield Youth and Community Centre has won an excellence in Construction award from the Master Builders Association of NSW.

It is not only Council that can celebrate news of this win, but also the citizens of Fairfield City.

Fairfield Youth and Community Centre is a huge, much needed asset for our community, designed by youth for youth. The award's judges commented that "the workmanship throughout the project was exceedingly high and had resulted in an excellent community facility for a very satisfied client, Fairfield City Council".

The Youth and Community centre is a vital part of the larger Fairfield Park precinct, which also includes Fairfield Adventure Park and surrounding facilities and parklands.

This fantastic facility has now been used by the community several times since its official opening, most recently at the Children's Week family fun day on 1 November.

The Master Builders Association award emphasises what we already knew about the Youth and Community Centre – that it is an outstanding facility for our City.

Remembrance Day

Today I'll be laying a wreath at Fairfield RSL as part of Remembrance Day, a day that is special to all Australians.

Originally called Armistice Day, it was a day to mark the armistice signed at 11am on 11 November 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month) between the Allies of

World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France, which ended the hostilities on the Western Front.

Armistice Day also became the day to remember and honour the estimated nine to 13 million who were killed in that war.

After the end of World War II, the Australian and British governments changed the name to Remembrance Day, which has become a day to remember those who died or suffered or played a role in all wars and armed conflicts.

As well as laying the wreath, I will be observing the traditional one minute's silence at 11am to pay respect to those who have helped to make our country the envy of the world. I urge you to also observe this solemn occasion.
