$16 million in road upgrades

I am pleased to inform you that we have been awarded a $16.4 million grant to upgrade Smithfield Road.

The funding is part of round two of the Australian and NSW governments' $200 million Western Sydney Local Roads Package.

Smithfield Road will be upgraded between Polding Street and Elizabeth Drive. The project involves upgrades to the major intersections along Smithfield Road, providing two traffic lanes in both directions.

Council is expecting to start the project in mid-June and the community will be informed throughout the process. Council has been working hard towards obtaining this grant for the benefit of our residents, which will link into the existing upgrades at Wetherill Street.

Lunar New Year begins in Fairfield City

One of the things I love about Fairfield City is that we are one of the most multicultural places in the world. Residents of our city come from more than 130 cultural backgrounds, and with this come many diverse and exciting celebrations.

Over the next two weeks Fairfield City will be hosting Lunar New Year celebrations beginning with an exciting street party in Canley Heights this Saturday 6 February.

The night will be an action packed event including the crowd favourite eating competition presented by Huong Xua Restaurant and a lion dance. Later in the evening, families can watch the thrilling dragon dance, a performance held especially for New Year, followed by a spectacular fireworks display at 8.45pm.

The celebrations will continue in Cabramatta on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 February. Freedom Plaza will come to life with family-friendly entertainment over the whole weekend to welcome in the Year of the Monkey. Curious George, the world's favourite monkey will be performing live along with amazing bird shows, fashion parades, lion dances as well as plenty of cultural music, dance and singing. Visit the Council website to see the event program and find out more.

I look forward to celebrating Lunar New Year with you all.
