Summer Holiday reading program a success

Education is an important part of making our community thrive and stand out from the rest.

With this in mind, Council does what it can to assist the community by offering a range of education services.

Our childcare and preschool centres help children develop when learning takes place at a much faster pace than at any other time in their lives. Our libraries offer an online tutorial service for students, as well as special study programs for high school students studying their HSC. Free wi-fi at our libraries also allows anyone to access information on the internet.

Council also offers educational scholarships to assist eligible applicants to pursue their academic, artistic and sporting endeavours, and provides support to those with special needs to assist in achieving their ambitions.

This summer, Fairfield City Open Libraries launched the Mayor's Summer Holiday Program.

The Summer Holiday Program attracted 449 children who read for a combined 23,248 hours and 34 minutes. Readers were invited to attend Community Hero reading days.

There were Fly By Fun superhero performances, as well as a surprise guest appearance by Optimus Prime and Bumblebee from Transformers.

This free program was open to all children up to the age of 16, but also encouraged parents to sign up to read to children who were too young to read.

Last Friday I had the pleasure of awarding the major prizes of five iPad Minis and 15 Fairfield Leisure Centre pool passes. Due to the enthusiasm of some children, 10 additional Outstanding Achievement prizes were presented across the five library branches, rewarding the excellent effort by the children who read over and beyond the required minutes per week.

The reaction to the program was overwhelmingly positive. Hopefully the Summer Holiday Program will become a tradition in summers to come.
