Recognition for long-term Fairfield businesses

Fairfield City is home to more than 14,000 businesses producing goods and services to the community.

One of the success stories of our City is people who have become great entrepreneurs. Some started their businesses many years ago, providing services and boosting employment in the community.

Last year, Fairfield City Centre held the Lifetime Business Awards, which acknowledged 18 businesses that have operated successfully in the City centre for more than 25 years.

Following the success of these awards, I am happy to announce Council will be running the City-wide Lifetime Business Awards Program.

The program will run continuously, with one successful long-term business awarded at each of Council's Ordinary Meetings, for a total of 11 awards each year.

Businesses that are run by the original owner or are family owned and have been operating continuously for 25 years or more are eligible to be nominated for the Fairfield City Lifetime Business Award. Winners will receive a trophy and certificate, presented at Council's monthly meeting.

I am proud that Fairfield City has such an outstanding array of successful businesses that are the backbone of our local economy. Being able to host these awards is testimony to the successes of our area and the outstanding performance of business operators.

There are some fantastic success stories among last year's awards recipients. Among them is perhaps Fairfield's best known success story, Bing Lee, which started in Fairfield City Centre 59 years ago. Bing Lee has grown to become an Australia retail giant – and they still have a store in Fairfield.

I look forward to celebrating and recognising even more successful long-term businesses across the Fairfield Local Government Area in 2016.

Nominations open on Monday 4 April. Please visit www.fairfieldcity.nsw.gov.au/businessawards after 4 April for more information.
