Smithfield Road upgrade

I'm proud to have delivered many great projects and initiatives throughout this Council term.

There are many more exciting projects ahead, including an upgrade of Smithfield Road to four lanes.

Council recognised the need for the important upgrade and placed a bid for $16.4 million to undertake the project. In January, Federal Minister for Major Projects the

Hon Paul Fletcher MP announced Council's bid had been successful and that the funds would be awarded to upgrade Smithfield Road.

Work involves providing two traffic lanes in both directions.

Upgrades to major intersections between Polding Street and Elizabeth Drive will result in traffic lights being installed at the Dunstan Street intersection and at the Richards Road intersection, which will be re-aligned to face the entry to Fairfield Showground. Other traffic lights at King Street and Elizabeth Drive will be modified to enhance traffic flow.

Council expects to start the project from June this year and the community will be informed throughout the process.

Council has been working hard towards obtaining this grant, which will link into the existing upgrades at Wetherill Street.

Council also received $13.6 million last year under Round 1 of the Local Roads Package to upgrade Wetherill Street, Smithfield, which is being widened to four lanes from Polding Street to Victoria Street. Work is well under way between Polding Street and the Horsley Drive, and motorists are already taking advantage of the completed work  between The Horsley Drive and Victoria Street.

As part of the upgrade to Smithfield Road, traffic lights will be installed at the intersection with Dunstan Street.

Orthodox Easter

I'd like to wish all Orthodox Christians a happy Easter, or 'Pascha', which they'll celebrate on May 1.

Many Orthodox churches base their Easter date on the Julian calendar, which differs from the Gregorian calendar used by many Western countries, and which is why the Orthodox Easter period often occurs later than the traditional Easter period.
