Celebrating lollipop men and women

As school returns for the year, I encourage all our local families to take the time to thank your local lollipop men and women.

These wonderful school crossing attendants keep our children safe in the blistering heat of summer and the damp cold of winter and often go unrecognised. Many of them have served their school for years or even decades and have formed close bonds with their school and local families.

Without them, mornings around our local schools would be far more dangerous for adults and children alike. No matter how careful local drivers are when driving through school zones, there are always risks with that many people sharing the roads, especially with young children involved. They provide a highly-visible and safe way for our City’s most vulnerable residents to cross the road.

Take the time to say hello, ask them their name and get to know them. Be polite and thank them when they help you cross the road. Let them know that you appreciate all their hard work. If you’re driving, slow down and be courteous when they are helping schoolkids cross the road.

I will be doing my bit to show my appreciation during the school year by going out and meeting each of our City’s lollipop men and women and providing them with a special care pack to help them get through their mornings and afternoons. This could include such items as sunscreen and bottled water, which will be especially important during our City’s warmer months.

Our City is full of wonderful, hard-working people giving back to the community and making the City a better place to live, work, play and raise a family. This is just one of the ways that Council is supporting our community-minded residents throughout the year.
