Many of you would have seen a lot of work taking place on our road network.

Council maintains an extensive network of more than 700km of roads through filling potholes and also resurfacing when needed. High quality roads make our trips to work, school, shops and activities across our City faster and safer. I’m pleased that Council is continuing to invest strongly in this area with $13.1 million in improvements to more than 21km of roads planned for this financial year.

This includes the upgrade to Smithfield Road. The Smithfield Road upgrade is due to be completed in December, which will create four lanes of traffic from Elizabeth Drive to Polding Street, including a much safer intersection at Fairfield Showground. Final road widening works will begin next week just south of Edensor Road.

This is the second stage of creating a major new carriageway that commenced at Wetherill Street in 2017 to allow traffic on The Horsley Drive to drive all the way through to Elizabeth Drive. It is taking trucks off local roads, meaning less congestion, a safer commute and more time at home with your families.

Recently, we extended Sweethaven Road to provide an uninterrupted link between Edensor Road and Prairie Vale Road. This is something residents have been asking about for a while and I’m glad that we have been able to deliver this important link.

We are also improving the traffic flow and safety on a number of roads for both drivers and pedestrians. This includes roundabouts at the intersection of Cumberland and Bridge streets in Cabramatta, and Brenan and O’Connell streets in Smithfield, and reconstructing the roundabout at Canley Vale and Avoca roads in Canley Heights. A pedestrian island will also be built on The Avenue near Railway Parade at Canley Vale.

Council is very proud of our roads network. If you see any roads that need repairing, please report it at www.fairfieldcity.nsw.gov.au/Your-Council/Report-It.
