Mayor’s Summer Holiday Program

Published on 08 December 2022

Reading is one of the most important skills for a child to develop, for education and for fun. This summer, I invite local children to join the Mayor’s Summer Holiday Program proudly run by Fairfield City Open Libraries.

This literacy program is designed to engage children with libraries and regular reading throughout the summer to maintain and improve their skills. It is a great way to meet new friends, learn more about the community, libraries and most importantly, have fun!

It’s easy! Read, listen, or be read at least 20 books. With incentives awarded along the way, there is no reason not to join this exciting reading program that encourages children ages 0 to 13 to keep up their reading skills during the holidays. The reading program runs until Tuesday 31 January 2023.

Return your completed passport to the library where you registered for the chance to win some great prizes.

To get involved, visit your local library to register and collect your Mayor’s Summer Holiday Program reading passport. Each child must register using their own library card, it is free to become a member!

Earlier this year, Fairfield City was selected as one of only two metropolitan councils to partner with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program, a free book gifting program to inspire young children to develop a love of reading.

Children enrolled in the program receive a free age-appropriate book each month in the mail to keep.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program encourages parents to support their children with resources to improve their literacy and communication skills from an early age. By the end of the program, children will have built up the skills to read books on their own. Information and advice for parents will also be provided to help engage with their child while reading aloud.

If you have a baby born this year, you can enrol in this fantastic program. For more information visit the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library page or phone 9725 0333.

I am extremely proud that Fairfield City Council is part of these fantastic learning initiatives and I look forward to seeing the success of these programs in our community.
