Last Sunday, my Councillor colleagues and I officially opened the People’s Globe at Fairfield Showground. This Sunday we will open Deerbush Park all-abilities playground.

Council’s vision to make Fairfield Showground a sporting, cultural and recreational precinct for families is becoming a reality.

The People’s Globe is an everlasting tribute to every one of us who have travelled from across the globe, or whose ancestors have travelled here, to make Fairfield City their home. Whether in the past 10 or the past 200 years, we have all come from somewhere. The People’s Globe also honours our Indigenous history.

Located at the Smithfield Road entrance to the Showground, the People’s Globe is a large granite sphere engraved with the world map that spins on a water basin.

There is also a wall of ceramic tiles with the nations of origin of Fairfield City’s residents and bronze plaques that point out the direction and distance of those places. Flying overhead is a large Australian Flag – the biggest in our City.

The People’s Globe is a fitting tribute to Fairfield City’s rich and colourful heritage. While we are all proud to call Australia home and live as Australians, we also value our heritage and homelands.

Fairfield Showground is the cultural and geographical heart of our City, so it is fitting that this site was chosen to honour and celebrate the mums, dads, grandparents and brothers and sisters who left their homes, often with very little, to come here to seek opportunities and a new life in this wonderful nation.

I encourage you to visit the People’s Globe with your friends and family and find your heritage.
