The fight for Fairfield Hospital continues
Published on 02 November 2022
Over the past year, I have been advocating for an urgent upgrade at Fairfield Hospital after almost 11,000 people signed a petition to upgrade the hospital. The petition was presented to local Members of Parliament and Ministers including the Health Minister.
Fairfield Hospital was opened 34 years ago and in that time, there has never been a major upgrade to its facilities or services. Only $7 million has been spent by the State Government on any upgrades in that time. This is compared to $1.4 billion the State Government has committed to upgrades at Liverpool Hospital, $1.3 billion at Bankstown-Lidcombe, $700 million and Blacktown and $479 million at Ryde hospitals.
My fight to get Fairfield Hospital upgraded takes urgent importance as the 2023 state election looms.
In a recent Council meeting, I put on notice both the NSW State Government and the opposition leader, Chris Minns because Fairfield will not be forgotten. If the hospital is not considered for major upgrades by either parties, I will do everything to campaign to ensure our community is heard.
Fairfield Hospital is a level 3-4 hospital which means it effectively functions as a triage hospital and sends many patients to surrounding hospitals, putting pressure on them, because it does not have the facilities to deal with emergencies.
This is not about the doctors, nurses and all the staff at the hospital. They are doing their best in very difficult circumstances and they need more resources and support.
Our region is growing, we are close to the new Western Sydney airport and our local hospital must be able to cater for the health needs of people in this area. We have a diverse and unique population, and we deserve better care.
I will continue to fight for this community and its residents and ensure that this is a great place to live, work and play.
