What is the Lunar New Year celebrations about?
Lunar New Year is a significant cultural celebration in many South East Asia countries.

Lunar New Year date for 2023 is on Sunday 22 January 2023 (Day 1). Leading up to this day, people clean their homes to prepare for the New Year. It is also considered bad luck to sweep or clean on New Year’s Day as you may sweep away your good luck and fortune! The first person to enter your house on New Year’s Day is believed to either bring you good luck or bad luck for the rest of the year – so be careful!

Lions and string firecrackers re-open the shops and restaurants to banish evil from the old and bring in good luck and fortune for the New Year. You will see businesses decorated in red with lanterns, ornaments, and flowers such as marigolds.

Is Lunar New Year 2023 the Year of the Cat or Rabbit?

Each Lunar New Year is associated with an animal name for one of 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac. The Vietnamese zodiac resembles the Chinese zodiac except that the fourth animal is the Cat instead of the Rabbit. It was believed that the Chinese word for “rabbit” — (mǎo tù) — sounded like “meo” in Vietnamese, which means “cat”.

Cabramatta Lunar New Year 2023 will see attendees come together in harmony to celebrate the Year of the Cat (Vietnamese Zodiac) and the Year of the Rabbit (Chinese Zodiac).
