Improving our local roads

Council continues to invest in our City to provide and upgrade infrastructure, including local roads.

We have more than 680km of roads in our City, and every year Council conducts regular audits of the road network to make sure our roads are maintained and that the roads that have reached the end of their life cycle are prioritised for replacement. This is an ongoing program of maintenance and renewal.

In the past three years we spent $12 million a year on road improvements, but this year we have increased spending to $15 million, enabling us to repair and upgrade more roads.

In the past few years we have extended and widened Wetherill Street and Smithfield Road to provide a dual lane carriageway that connects The Horsley Drive to Elizabeth Drive, assisting in taking traffic off our smaller roads and making travel times quicker.

Building new roads isn’t cheap. These two roads alone cost $30 million, including new traffic signals, kerbs, drains, streetlights and more.

We also spent $550,000 completing the second stage of Sweethaven Road to provide an uninterrupted link between Edensor Road and Prairie Vale Road. We will continue to invest in new roads as the funds become available.

Over the last few weeks, we have completed works at Mimosa Road, Greenfield Park; Prairie Vale Road, Bossley Park; Heysen Street, Abbotsbury; Throsby Street, Fairfield Heights; and Alexander Street, Smithfield. We are also currently working at Bonnyrigg Avenue, Bonnyrigg and the Sackville/Canley Vale Road intersection at Canley Vale.

We also understand that roads can become damaged outside the improvement schedule. Council has a full time maintenance team that renews roads and schedules work to undertake minor repairs to fix pot holes, cracks and guttering.
