Welcome the Year of the Cat and Rabbit

Published on 19 January 2023

The Lunar New Year ‘Year of the Cat and Rabbit’ is this Sunday and our celebrations have kicked off already and will continue into the first week of February with many residents and businesses celebrating around our City.

We started the celebrations early last Saturday with a fun family night out with lion dancing, amusement rides and fireworks at Canley Heights town centre.

On Saturday, 04 February, from 11am to 8pm, Cabramatta will feature a full day of family celebrations to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Then on Saturday 11 February there will be the Blessing of Fairfield City and the community at Cabramatta.

Saturday, 04 February will see a full line-up of family activities and entertainment including a visit from the god of wealth, caricature drawings, face painting, balloon twisting, a CareFlight flight simulator and much more at Freedom Plaza’s Mekong Activation Zone. Celebrations will continue into the evening under the beautiful lantern lights.

Arthur Street’s Fun Zone will keep the little ones entertained with roving performers, including special LED performers in the evening, fascinating interactive SBS lion dancing workshops, amusement rides and carnival games. Also in the evening will be lion dance training with the traditional crackers leading into the spectacular fireworks finale at 8pm to cap off the celebrations.

Local food outlets will also be open until late, so please shop locally and show your support as this is a very important time of the year for them.

Each year this significant cultural event at Cabramatta brings tens of thousands out to celebrate, bringing together friends and family to wish each other happiness, good health, success and prosperity for the year ahead. I hope to see you there.

I wish you all a Happy Lunar New Year and I hope the Year of the Cat and Rabbit brings you all good health, prosperity and happiness.
