Gemma Ylana
Gemma Ylana is a Chilean-Italian singer-songwriter and DJ from Greenfield Park, blending R&B, Pop, Reggaeton, and Dance into a style uniquely her own. Her music explores themes of love, self-discovery, and the emotional journey from adolescence to adulthood. In 2024, Gemma released her debut EP Primavera, a heartfelt nod to her cultural roots—primavera means "spring" in both Italian and Spanish, symbolising her artistic arrival.
In her EP track Nonna Y Tata, Gemma included sound bites from her grandparents sharing stories on migrating to Australia, their homelands, and what love means to them. Gemma states: Italian and Spanish are two languages I grew up hearing, I’m not fluent in either currently, but I really wanted to include these languages in my EP - so I did through the voices of my grandparents.
Gemma's drive to evolve as an artist has earned her spots in respected early-career programs for Western Sydney musicians. She was mentored by Hip Hop icon L-Fresh the Lion through Campbelltown Arts Centre’s Conscious 4 program, and was recently awarded the 2024 Generations Fellowship, a prestigious initiative powered by Create NSW, Powerhouse Museum, and Blacktown Arts.
When asked what support she would like to see for local musicians, she notes need for more gig opportunities in our local area.
When not creating, she enjoys walking the trails behind Greenfield Park Shops—spaces of solace and childhood nostalgia she rediscovered during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Gemma Ylana is currently in the beginning stages of conceptualizing her next EP, continuing her exploration of sound, identity, and self-discovery.
