1. Local volunteering opportunities 

Community Visitor

Organisation: New School of Arts Neighbourhood House

Time Commitment:  Monday to Sunday, ongoing, flexible (a couple of hours per week - any day/time to suit both you and the person you visit)

Position Description: Community Visitors Scheme is a Department of Health initiative designed to reduce social isolation of elderly people living in our community through the introduction of a volunteer visitor who shares their interests and/or background for the purpose of friendship.

Visits are usually once a week for an hour or two. We are currently looking for volunteers to visit one of two ladies - one is Lebanese and speaks Arabic, the other is Iranian and speaks both Arabic and Farsi. Both live in Carramar.

The program aims to engage young people’s strengths by building skills and experience through mentoring support..

Youth Frontiers Mentors

Organisation: Core Community Services

Time Commitment:  Monday to Sunday, ongoing, flexible

Position Description: Youth Frontiers is a youth mentoring program for female children and young people, aged 10-17 years in contact with the criminal justice and child protection systems in the Fairfield LGA.

Education Volunteer

Organisation: Fairfield City Museum & Gallery

Time Commitment: Once a week - Tuesday, ongoing

Position Description: Fairfield City Museum & Gallery is seeking volunteers to assist delivering the Living the Past education program.

Delivered on Tuesdays in the Vintage Village, it is designed to give primary age students a glimpse into the lives of early settlers.

Opportunities are open for general volunteer & blacksmith positions, training provided. Applicants must have a Working with Children Check & up-to -date COVID-19 vaccination..

Fire Fighter

Organisation: Horsley Park Rural Fire Brigade

Time Commitment: Once a week. Wednesday evenings. 

Position Description: NSW RFS Brigade Member: trained as a Firefighter to fight fires and attend other emergency incidents in Rural Fire Districts.

Other roles do exist such as Communications Operators and Logistical Roles however these are based at Penrith at the Zone Office.

Volunteer Male Mentor

Mentoring Men has available volunteer positions for men to be professionally trained to support other men in our community.

Driving Mentor

Organisation: Gymea Community Aid & Information Service
Time Commitment: Ongoing availability. Once a week (Monday-Sunday). Flexible. 
Position Description:
The Drive Time Mentor Volunteer provides supervised driving practice to selected refugee clients. All driving practice occurs in an insured automatic vehicle.

The objectives of the program are: Improve road safety outcomes supporting driver licensing disadvantaged communities to meet the Graduated Licensing Scheme (GLS) requirements, leading to reduced crash and injury rates.

Volunteers must:

  • Have not had an at fault accident in the previous two years
  • Have minimum of 3 years safe driving record

Volunteer English Tutor

Organisation: Navitas
Time Commitment: Ongoing availability. Once a week (Monday-Sunday). Flexible.
Position Description:
Tutors offer informal English language tuition to new migrants and refugees. The AMEP Volunteer Tutor Scheme helps migrants and refugees who are unable to attend AMEP English classes or who require additional learning support, with one on one lessons for 1 hour per week, face to face (online during Covid). Anyone can become a volunteer tutor, even if you’re not a native English speaker. Lesson times are flexible depending on your availability. (AMEP is funded by the Department of Home Affairs).
