Steps to school

In NSW, children can start Kindergarten at the beginning of the school year if they turn 5 on or before 31 July of that year.  All children must be in compulsory schooling by their 6th birthday.

Parents can help their child to be ready to start school by taking them to playgroup when they’re very young, and enrolling them in childcare or preschool as they get older.  At playgroup, childcare and preschool, children will learn to play with other children, practice sharing toys and waiting for their turn; they will practice listening to stories, and learn to count and lots of other things they will need when they start school.

Parents can also help by talking, singing, reading and playing with children everyday as that’s how children learn – talk about what you see when you are walking or driving, ask your child to help you set the table for dinner and count how many spoons you will need, read a story with your child before bedtime – everyday activities like these are learning opportunities for young children and help them to be ready to start school.

Do I need childcare or preschool?

Childcare

Childcare is generally for parents that work or study.  Childcare centres are open from about 7am to 6pm. Some childcare centres will enrol children from about 6 weeks of age while others enrol children from the age of 2 years.

Childcare centres can have a range of different names such as childcare centre, long day care centre, early learning centre, kindergarten or preschool.

Family Day Care is another type of childcare where an educator cares for children in the educator’s home.

Preschool

Preschools are open for shorter hours such as 9am to 3pm and enrol children in the year or two before they start Kindergarten – 3 or 4 year old children.

All of these are called early childhood services and all have to demonstrate that they meet the Australian National Quality Standards, and provide educational activities for children of all ages.  Young children learn through play so all of these services support children’s learning through a play-based program of activities.

All of these early childhood services can enrol and support the learning and development of children with disability or other special needs.
