Fairfield City Council’s Reconciliation Action Plan

In July 2000, Fairfield City Council signed a statement to reaffirm Local Government of Australia’s commitment to maintaining a culturally diverse, tolerant and open society, united by an overriding commitment to our nation, its democratic institutions and values. 

The statement of commitment acknowledges and recognises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first peoples of Australia. The statement also commits local government to develop strategies to improve the level of participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in local Government in all levels.

Reconciliation Action Plans (RAPs) are a strategy used to identify and respond to local needs and concerns of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and can also contribute to the national strategy to close the gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians.

Fairfield City Council’s Reconciliation Action Plan is our strategy to building positive relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians. The plan is guided by the 5 dimensions of reconciliation as defined by Reconciliation Australia: race relations, equality and equity, institutional integrity, unity and historical acceptance.

The 2023 – 2026 Reconciliation Action Plan is the fourth of its kind and builds on strategies running from 2005 – 2010, 2011 – 2016 and 2021 – 2022.
