I was excited recently to join Landcare NSW and local volunteers at Fairfield Hospital in the continuing program to make our City a greener place to live. Volunteers planted 1,200 native trees as well as 2,000 shrubs and grasses along Polding Street which will be enjoyed by people as they drive by, as well as improve local biodiversity and help keep our City cool. These plants were grown at our community nursery on behalf of Landcare NSW.

While I was there I met local resident Brittany Dickson, who is the current Miss Earth Australia and regularly volunteers to help our local environment. Brittany is an inspirational young woman who shows that all of us can do our part to improve the environment of our City. Volunteers at our Community Nursery at Fairfield Showground grow nearly all the trees, shrubs and grasses we plant across the City. Every year we grow more than 50,000 plants at the nursery. A big thank you to all the volunteers who do a great job of collecting seeds, growing and tending to the plants.

These trees and plants are being used to improve the environment around Grey-headed Flying-Fox Camp at Cabramatta Creek, the shoreline of Chipping Norton Lake, as well as at many of Council’s parks and reserves. We are also planting in our urban areas, including Crepe Myrtle trees along Bonnyrigg Avenue, as well as shrubs at many of our major intersections as part of our efforts to improve the look of our streets and inspire pride in our City. All up, Council plants approximately 10,000 trees a year and countless shrubs and flowers to keep our City looking great all year round for residents and visitors.

Residents interested in volunteering at our community nursery can do so by calling 9725 0222. It is a great way to meet new people while contributing to improving our City's environment.
