People Power – Fairfield Hospital upgrade campaign gains traction

Published on 22 November 2022

Thanks to people power and our petition signed by 11,000 community members, we have secured a commitment from the NSW Opposition for a $115 million upgrade to Fairfield Hospital over the next three years. This is great news.

We have been lobbying both sides of politics, because no matter who wins the next election, the people of Fairfield City are entitled to proper local healthcare.

I can also reveal that I, along with the Federal Member for Fowler Dai Le MP, have been speaking with NSW Premier Domenic Perrottet, about the current NSW Government also committing funding for Fairfield Hospital upgrades. The Premier has been very receptive to discussing the issue and we hope to see the Government also make a commitment that at least matches the Opposition. I have been informed that a detailed response from the Health Minister will be received shortly.

The Chief Executive of SWS Local Health District has invited me to a meeting to discuss concerns raised about Fairfield Hospital. So that I can continue to share your stories and experiences of Fairfield Hospital, I ask that you continue to write to me (Ourhospital@fairfieldcity.nsw.gov.au) and let me know your experiences of Fairfield Hospital. As the Mayor, I am here to represent your views and ensure that we have access to better health care.

The Parliamentary Inquiry into South West Sydney health services, heard of some services being rationed and other services simply not existing and recommended urgent upgrades to Fairfield Hospital.  Over 15% of patients who presented to Fairfield Emergency Department turned around and left without receiving treatment – one of the highest rates in the State.

Although hospital staff have always done their best, for too long Fairfield Hospital has been underfunded and in need of serious repairs, upgrading and attention.

I would like to thank all the residents that have already reached out and shared their stories about Fairfield Hospital. I ask that you continue to write to me (Ourhospital@fairfieldcity.nsw.gov.au) and let me know your experiences of Fairfield Hospital.

We all want and are entitled to have access to the best health care. Upgrade to Fairfield Hospital will have benefits for everyone for many years to come.

If we don’t come together to fight for this, then no one will.
